252 Cherry Hinton Road, 8 Gresham Terrace

History of 252 Cherry Hinton Road

Anne (Anna) Cluzeau(x)

By 1893, Anna had established the Madame Charles Cluzeaux laundry at Biarritz Cottage, 44 Islip Road, Sunnymead, in north Oxford. Sunnymead became famous for its laundries and was popularly known as ‘Soapsud Island’. The area provided laundry services for dons from Oxford University. It seemed that the Cluzeau family were much-travelled, living, for example, in London (1889), Wigan (1891) and South Stoneham (1901). I refer to Sunnymead and its laundries in my forthcoming book: ‘The Butcher, The Tailor, The Picture-Frame Maker…Stories of Middle Way’ (The Book Guild, Feb. 2023). [Email from Gareth Winnow, 2022]

1911

Charles Cluzeau, 53, laundryman, born Limoges France

Anne, 55, laundry proprietress, born France (4 children, 1 died)

Aryile [Angele], 29, teacher of French singing and elocution, born France

Before 1911 Charles Cluzeau can be found in London (1889) and Mrs Charles Cluseaux in Oxford in 1895 where she ran a laundry.

In 1891 the family, Charles, Anna, Angel (11) and Alphonse L (7) were living at ‘The Laundry’ in Haigh, Lancashire.

In 1939 Angelé is living at 30  Regent Street.
